Registered for GST or tax, or not registered
What changes on your bills when a business is registered for GST or tax, and why in India you choose it once, when you set the business up.
GST registered, not GST registered, tax registered, GSTIN, tax number, VAT number, tax invoice, bill of supply, composition, unregistered business, no tax on invoice, remove GST, tax details, invoice titleEach of your businesses is either registered to charge tax or not. In India this is GST. In other countries the switch is called Tax registered and covers your VAT, sales tax or GST.
The choice decides the title on your invoices, whether your tax number prints and, in India, whether tax can be added at all.
Where it’s set
Section titled “Where it’s set”Open Settings › Business settings, open the business, then go to Tax details. In India the switch is called GST registered. Everywhere else it’s Tax registered.
A new business starts as registered. When it’s registered, you can also type your tax number (in India, your GSTIN). If the number is empty, you see “Documents omit the tax line until this is added”.
What changes
Section titled “What changes”| Registered | Not registered | |
|---|---|---|
| Invoice title (set when the business is created) | “Tax Invoice” | “Bill of Supply” in India, “Invoice” elsewhere |
| Your tax number on prints | Printed, if you’ve added it | Never printed |
| Tax summary on the bill | Shown | Shown only if the bill has tax |
| In India only: tax pickers and tax columns on screen | Shown | Hidden |
| In India only: Tax settings page | Shown | Hidden while this business is picked |
| In India only: adding tax to a line | Allowed | Not allowed, also on purchases |
The title is chosen when the business is created. A new business that isn’t registered always starts on its default title, even if you copy it from a business with its own title. To write your own title, for example “Bill” or “Retail Invoice”, go to Settings › Documents & printing › Print settings and look for Job invoice title and Sale invoice title.
India: you choose it once
Section titled “India: you choose it once”In India, you choose GST registered when you set up the business. After that the switch shows “Cannot be changed”: “Chosen when the business is set up and fixed afterwards, because every document already issued was priced under it.”
If you add an item that has a tax to a business that isn’t registered, the tax is taken off that line.
Picked the wrong choice? In India you can’t change it yourself after the business is set up. Contact support (support@bytephase.com) and we’ll help.
Outside India
Section titled “Outside India”Outside India you can switch Tax registered on or off at any time, for example when you register for VAT later.
Turning it off stops your tax number printing. It doesn’t change the invoice title by itself: change Job invoice title and Sale invoice title in Print settings yourself. It also doesn’t hide tax columns or the Tax settings page, and it doesn’t remove tax from your parts or services. If you don’t charge tax, don’t pick a tax on your parts and services.
Two businesses, two choices
Section titled “Two businesses, two choices”Each business has its own choice. For example, your repair shop can be registered while your second business isn’t. Every document follows the business it was created in, not the business picked in the switcher. See Which business’s details print, and why.
Something not right?
Section titled “Something not right?”- Tax columns don’t show on a bill: see Tax columns are missing on invoices.
