Turning on two-factor login signed everyone out

Why all your staff were signed out after you turned on two-factor login, and how to get everyone back in.

everyone logged out, all staff signed out, logged out suddenly, two factor, 2FA, authenticator, can't log in, lost phone, lost backup codes, set up two-factor authentication screen, code not working, invalid verification code, expired two-factor token
Works on computer and phone

What you see: right after someone turned on Require two-step login for staff, every staff member was signed out on every computer and phone. When they sign in again, BytePhase asks them to set up an authenticator app.

This is expected. Turning the setting on signs out all staff at once, so everyone signs in again with the extra step.

Each staff member does this once.

  1. Install an authenticator app on your phone, for example Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator or Authy.
  2. Sign in with your email and password.
  3. On Set up two-factor authentication, scan the QR code with the app. Or type the key shown under Or enter this key manually.
  4. Type the 6-digit code from the app.
  5. Save the backup codes, then tap I’ve saved my codes.

See Turn on two-factor login for your staff.

  • Type the newest code. Each code changes every 30 seconds.
  • Check that the phone’s date and time are set to automatic. A clock that’s off makes the codes wrong.
  • If you waited a few minutes after typing your password, tap Back to login and sign in again.
  1. On the code screen, tap Use a backup code.
  2. Type one of the backup codes you saved. Each code works once.
  3. Once you’re in, open your profile menu, choose Two-factor login, then Disable 2FA. At your next sign-in you can set up the new phone.

A staff member can’t get in without one or the other.

  1. The shop owner can turn off Require two-step login for staff for a while. Staff then sign in with just their password.
  2. Once the person is in, turn the setting back on. Note: turning it on signs everyone out again.

Contact support and send:

  • your shop’s web address and the staff member’s email
  • whether they see the set-up screen or the code screen
  • the exact message on screen
