Payment types are the ways customers can pay you: cash, card, cheque and so on. You pick one as the Payment mode each time you record a payment. The list is shared by all your businesses.

Go to Settings › Payment & tax › Payment types. The page says “The payment methods you accept.”

The table shows each Payment type and how many Payments have used it.

Payment type What it’s for
Cash Notes and coins at the counter.
Online Bank transfers and UPI payments you check yourself.
Cheque Cheques. Picking it shows a Cheque number field.
Card Card machine or card payments.
Phone Pay (Automatic) BytePhase uses it for payments that come in through PhonePe. It shows in the Payment mode list only in India on the Standard plan and above.
  • Add: click the add button, type the Payment type name (for example “GPay” or “Bank transfer”) and save. The window is called Add payment type.
  • Add while taking a payment: if your shop owner allows it, the Payment mode list has an add option, so you can create a type without leaving the payment.
  • Rename: click the pencil next to the type.
  • Remove: click the bin. You can only remove a type no payment has used. Otherwise you see “Can’t delete Cash — it’s used in 12 payments.”

Each name can only be used once. A second “Card” shows “Payment type name already exists”.

  • Keep the names Cash and Cheque as they are. BytePhase looks for these exact names. For example, it shows the Cheque number field only for Cheque.
  • Don’t remove or rename Phone Pay (Automatic) if you use PhonePe. See Collect payments with PhonePe.
  • Only people your shop owner allows can add, change or remove payment types.
